4. STUDENT WORK/ACHIEVEMENTS

10B Projects

My project was on character creation and creative writing. The story I wrote, set in 1863 London, is about a homeless girl who found and later joined an unknown circus. I drew characters for my story. This character’s name is Sally, and she’s the main character in my story.

In Term Two I wrote a part of my story leading up to her getting to the circus. She’s based off a Pierrot clown which is the sad clown characters.

This term, I want to focus on art instead of writing and graphics. My project will be on character design and profiling, and I plan to learn how to orient and pose characters in art, practice my ability to draw ideas in my head, and write to show the personality and perspective of the characters I make using a variety of methods.

One of the main skills I wish to build is my ability to accept when I don't like exactly how something looks, and be willing and able to enjoy just practicing without expectations.

My project this term will be about dehydration and its effects on both the physical and mental state.
I’ll be conducting an experiment to test peoples’ mental state, reflexes and physical abilities after their water intake is reduced for a period of time in comparison to when they are fully hydrated.

The project I worked on last term was learning about beekeeping. I showed this by making a 3D printed beehive and talking about the different parts of the beehive and how they worked in my exhibition. I also talked to my LTI adult about possibly installing a beehive into the Community Garden.
This helped me realise how bees are so important to the wildlife, and how we use honey that bees make worldwide. This is linked to my interest in biology, since I like how interesting the bees’ bodies are and what they can do.

In Term 2, I did a project about How Body Dysmorphic Disorder Ruins Lives. It meant a lot to me because I have struggled a lot with body image in the past and I wanted to spread awareness about how body image can cause more serious mental disorders if not properly treated.
During my research I tended to focus on what body dysmorphic disorder was, the symptoms of it and what to do if you’re worried you’ve developed It. My focus was to research then spread awareness and to find help for the people who need it. This interest helped me understand how little people know about the issue and only made me more motivated to spread awareness and inform people.
This project helped realise that I have a passion about neurological science and what goes on inside the brain, and I wish to explore this in the future.

This term my project is seeing if people can tell the difference between box mix and homemade baked goods.

I have five different box mixes to try out - vanilla cake, chocolate cake, cookies, chocolate mousse, and butterscotch pudding. I’m interested in seeing if the box mixes that claim to taste the same or “better” than homemade are the same, worse or better.

I need willing taste testers and people to give feedback. If you’re interested, email me at: tilly.elmer.00@education.tas.edu.au to apply!

Claye's Senior Project

My project is about making a model boat. I've done two versions, a version where I used my previous skills to make a model boat and a version where I learnt how to make one. I've used foam to help me get an idea for the finalised project. This project is helping improve my planning skills, my finesse with tools, and general Empirical Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning skills.

LTI – Just Cats Launceston: Koby

IMG_20250527_114911704.jpg

Just Cats Launceston is a not-for-profit cat welfare organisation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing cats             and kittens across Tasmania. They operate adoption centres, a public desexing clinic, and provide support for cat surrenders, all with a focus on compassionate and responsible pet ownership.

During Term 2, Koby visited Just Cats with a small group of other students for his LTI.  Having the chance to pat, play with and look after a range of different cats, from kittens and mothers to much older cats that have been abandoned, was an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Newstead College Career Expo

Students in Term 3 were gifted a smorgasbord of outlearning experience at the annual Career Expo held at Newstead College. Students were able to attend workshops around areas of interest, as well as visit stalls with experts on hand to answer questions and provide contact information for students to follow up for future LTI’s or even a career.

Students of 10A were able to share about what they got from the event.

“It was good, I found the civil construction group interesting because they were good speakers. I asked about how to become a carpenter, they were able to give me some tips.” Jesse of 10A said.

Decon enjoyed many of the stalls, “It was fun, I collected a lot of pens, there was a lot of stuff to look at. The Police stall was the most interesting because I was able to ask questions, they gave me a booklet to read which has inspired me to consider a career with Tas Police.”

Rowan attended one of the workshops, it was their highlight of the event. “The drama workshop was well organised, they had students do some activities which made us all feel involved.”

Working on Student Video Profiles - 12 Advisory

Alongside working on their Senior Project for Term 3, students in Grade 12 are also hard at work creating their Student Video Profiles, an important part that contributes to receiving their IBPLC.  Over the past term and a half, students have created a script that tells their Launceston Big Picture story.  From when they first started at BP, their interests, early Projects, information about their Senior Project and plans for the future.   Once these videos are completed, we will be able to share some with you.

Book Week

Magical clouds settled in the morning sky, thick with the scent of anticipation and joy. Students emerged — not as themselves, but as echoes of myth, imagination and reality. Capes fluttered. Glitter shimmered. Horns, wings, masks and mystery adorned every face.

This term at Launceston Big Picture School we enjoyed Book Week, and the theme was “Book an Adventure!”. Here's a roundup of creative happenings and newsletter-worthy moments held on Friday 22nd August 2025.
