Last Day of Term |
Dear Families,
Term 4 is such an exciting term for a school with lots of activities, events and celebrations. This will certainly be the case for Launceston Big Picture School and we look forward to sharing all of these events and celebrations with everyone through our Newsletter and Social Media sites.
Our senior students have been busily putting the finishing touches to their digital graduation portfolios which include some amazing individual video profiles- they look amazing! This year all of our year 12 graduates will receive their International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC). I would like to acknowledge and congratulate our students and 11/12 staff for their work with what is an extremely exciting element of the Big Picture assessment processes.
Whilst learning remains our key focus for the term, our key end of year celebration events are currently being organised for our students and wider school community. Launceston Big Picture School recognises the importance of celebrating success and we are excitedly working with our students, families and staff to ensure that our end of year activities recognise the fantastic achievements of our young people. There will still be some changes “to the norm” which will be outlined below:
We have also finalised our key end of year events. Please see details below:
Presentation Awards Evening: Wednesday December 20th, 5:30 - 6:30pm
This year our celebration event is being held at the Tramsheds Function Centre- right next door to our school! We are excited with this change and hope that all of our school community are able to attend. Individual students will be recognised with special and prestigious awards, and we will also farewell and congratulate our year 12 graduates.
We have just shared invitations with students and look forward to an exciting event.
Celebration Dinner: Wednesday December 20th, 6:30 - 8:30pm
Our Celebration dinner will commence at 6:30pm at the Tramsheds Function Centre. Invited grade 9-12 students will receive their invitations in November. Students will need to be collected from the front of the Tramsheds at 8:30pm.
School Information Night
Our final family information night for anyone interested in hearing about the great things that happen at our school and more specifically, the key aspects associated with Big Picture Education is on Wednesday November 8th commencing at 5:00 pm. Anyone interested in attending this is most welcome, however, it is essential that you contact Marianne Olsen at school on 63 35 1500 or marianne.olsen@decyp.tas.gov.au to register your intent to attend.
RYDA
The Rotary Driver Awareness Program (RYDA) is a series of practical and powerful workshops that aim to change the way young people think about road safety. All of our year 10 students recently participated in an interactive one-day experience, our students experienced braking at different speeds, devise travel strategies that will work for them in the real world and they got tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family. Perhaps the most impactful moments came from the personal stories of loss and survival.

New Enrolments For 2024
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from students who would like to join our school in 2024. The Big Picture Learning Design requires students to actively engage in planning and participating in their own academically rigorous and personalised learning program. Some of the key criteria are:
- Students with strong attendance and work ethic, but may not perform at their best in exam situations
- Students who are self-motivated and can work in a highly personalised way
- Students who have the confidence to participate in a Learning Through Internship (up to 30 days per year or 180 hours)
We will be hosting an Information Evening on Wednesday 8th November for interested families. This will be at our school, 4 Invermay Rd Inveresk, commencing at 5:00pm. Families wishing to attend should RSVP by contacting our school office on 63 351500 or by emailing Marianne Olsen- marianne.olsen@decyp.gov.tas.au.
Following expressions of interest students will be invited to participate in a transition program designed to give students a deeper understanding of the Big Picture Design including Advisory, Learning Goals, Learning through Internship and Exhibitions.
We have limited places in Grades 9,10, 11 & 12 for 2024; interested students should RSVP to attend the Family Information Evening.
If you have any questions or require further clarification, please contact Marianne Olsen 6335 1500 marianne.olsen@decyp.tas.gov.au

Beacon Foundation
Thank you to Kathy from Beacon Foundation collaborating with Fulcrum Robotics in offering a session to a group of students interested in IT. Mark from Fulcrum Robotics delivered information to students about career pathways using drones and robotics. Students were able to watch Mark using a UAV drone for surveying techniques to capture high resolution 3D data. Mark flew the drone over a power line showing us how the drone views images for inspection analysis. Another experience students participated in was observing Mark drive a robot, which is used for dangerous situations or locations where people are unable to access.
We thoroughly appreciate this leaving to learn adventure and especially to Fulcrum Robotics.

A picture of the group is taken by the drone using aerial thermal imaging.
Launceston Library
Hello, my name’s Fenix and for the past six months I’ve been attending an LTI at the Launceston Library. The person I’ve been shadowing is a customer service officer (or CSO). Despite having customer in the name, there’s not actually all that much work helping visitors. A lot of what I did involved organisation; sorting returns, shelving and handling the clearing house. The clearing house is where we send off books to other libraries around the state when they’re requested, so it involves a lot of packing and unpacking boxes. Overall my time there has been really enjoyable and I look forward to going there each week.

RYDA
LBPS students took part in the RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) initiative at Symmons Plains on the last day of Term 3. It was a fantastic day and we participated in 6 different workshops about road, driver and vehicle awareness and safety. Thanks to the Tas. Government for sponsoring this event and Rotary Tasmania for their support and running the sessions today. It was great!

Lyncoln's Cheese!
As part of Lyncoln’s Term 4 project he is experimenting with making a number of different cheeses as well as investigating the unique and interesting history of this now vast and sometimes expensive delight! The video shows the process of making a simple Farmer’s Cheese. He created 2 variants: 1 with herbs and the other containing caramelised onion. There were only a few meltdowns in the kitchen, but well done Lyncoln it’s looking Gouda!

Space Awareness School
Over the weekend of September 30th and October 1st, 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to be a part of a Space Awareness School hosted at the Hive in Ulverstone. I was one of ten students from years 7-12 across the state to be selected to participate in this unique and enlightening space school. The event comprised a total of 17 captivating presentations, each delving into various aspects of Australia's role in space exploration and the broader scope of space science. I thoroughly enjoyed the event and feel immensely grateful for the opportunity to attend.

Halloween
On Friday we held a Halloween dress-up fundraiser to raise money for the Salvation Army Red Bag Appeal. We saw some great outfits and we also sold some Halloween themed jewellery to contribute to the funds, accompanied by some spooky food including escargot snails, blue cheese, and Halloween treats.

Student Credential Portfolio
One of the defining features of the Big Picture Design is that young people leave school with a credential based on a portfolio that really reflects who they are and what they can do. Our senior students in Grade 12 have been working really hard to collect and collate evidence that shows this.
The International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC) is the qualification that our students leave school with. It is rigorous and authentically reflects each young person. The IBPLC is recognised by universities and other tertiary education institutions and supports our students to achieve their Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), which is the highest level of award for senior students in Tasmania.
The IBPLC consists of a digital transcript that includes:
- flower graph showing assessment of a student’s portfolio of project work using the Big Picture Learning Goals
- Advisor Statement
- list of real-world experiences and achievements
- e-Portfolio
- video profile
The e-Portfolio and video profile are highly curated products made by each student and provide them with a powerful tool, used to gain pathway opportunities such as employment, university enrolment, and scholarship funding.
Please enjoy browsing Brayden’s e-Portfolio and viewing his video profile.

The Big Picture Education Distinguishers:
- Families are enrolled too
Big Picture schools aim for real family engagement. Parents or carers are regarded as essential members of the learning team, beginning with the enrolment process, and progressing through to learn plan development, exhibitions, and graduation.
In week 2, parents and carers attended Learning Plan meetings for Grade 9 and 10 students.

5. ACTIVE LEARNING/FLEXIBLE GROUPS
Sport & Recreation
Our Sport and Recreation group continue to experience and try new things! Recently we visited the Invermay Bowls Club and participated in a workshop that explained how to play the game. Lots of fun was had by all.

Workshop
The workshop groups have continued to develop their skills and knowledge and have created some great items. You can see Kaden’s wicking bed out the from of the school with herbs growing for our café. This was built out of all repurposed materials include old pallets.
Aspiration, Courage, Respect, Growth
We are always looking for ways of rewarding positive behaviour at our school.
Students and staff are encouraged to nominate those people who have shown Aspiration, Courage, Respect or Growth.
Winners receive a voucher to dine at Cafe Red and our winners this term so far are:
- Wilbur McTaggart Williams: Aspiration & Courage - For speaking to experts about possibilities and areas of interest.
- Zac Holton: Courage & Growth - Great to see you getting outside of the building and connecting with THINK.
- Freya Carter: Aspiration, Courage, Respect & Growth - All "round" superstar!!
- Brayden Cunningham: Courage & Growth - For standing up to your fears and trying new things.
- Tyler Armstrong: Aspiration - Great work getting your reflective journals organised and up to date with learning.
- Zach Arnold: Aspiration - Dedication to writing video profile script.
Safeguarding Children and Young People
All children in Tasmania have a right to be known, safe, well and learning. We are highly committed to the safety of all students at our school.
Earlier this month, DECYP launched the Tell Someone initiative, to raise awareness in the community about child sexual abuse and grooming.
The Tell Someone website gives children and young people clear advice on what to do in situations where they feel worried, unsafe or unsure. It also gives adults advice and support on how to respond if they suspect or know a child is being groomed or sexually abused or is at risk of harm.
Please visit the website, read the information, and try to find a suitable time to talk with your children about this issue and the resources available. It’s important that you both understand the possible signs of sexual abuse or grooming behaviour, and how to stay safe online and offline.
If reading this information has caused you distress, please visit DECYP’s website for a list of support services.
Please contact the school if you have any questions about this information.
INFORMING SCHOOL OF STUDENT ABSENCES
Your child’s Advisory Teacher records attendance daily using the DECYP EduPoint system. Attendance is taken between 8:55am – 9:30am.
If your child is going to be absent, you will need to inform the school ASAP - otherwise the EduPoint system automatically marks the absence as ‘Unauthorised-Unexplained’ and this is not altered until communication is received from parents.
The preferred method of communication is to send the school an SMS 0427 016 460 (this is a short message service only, so you will not be able to ring the school on this number).
LBPS admin check the SMS service throughout the day and update any changes to student attendance.
You can of course ring the school direct on 6335 1500 and leave a voice message on the answer phone.
UPDATING STUDENT MEDICAL DETAILS
We are committed to ensuring that our information with regard to managing the wellbeing of our students is always accurate and updated.
If your son/daughter:
- has a medical need and would benefit from being supported by a medical action plan (MAP)
- currently has a Medical Action Plan at school but has had recent health changes and would benefit from their plan being adjusted and updated
- requires the support of medication during the school day
- has any other medical or mental health needs (new or needing to be updated)
We ask that you please complete the relevant attached form and return to our office ASAP.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
Please ensure your student keeps their school polo top in their bag or keeps it safe in their Advisory room at all times.
It is compulsory for students to wear their school uniform when attending school excursions, interviews, LTIs or if they are representing the school at events.
Uniforms can be purchased from the school office and are sold at cost price:
- Polo Shirts with school logo = $30
- School Hoody with school logo = $65
Any pre-worn uniform donations would be very much appreciated and are used in our emergency uniform/clothing pool.
PARKING
It is highly recommended that parents and visitors to the school DO NOT PARK along the nature strip in front of the school, along the footpath or on the grass area beside UTAS Stadium.
The Launceston City Council have recently approached the school and have informed staff that this area is being patrolled and $86.00 infringements are being issued.
Parents and visitors are advised to use the paid parking facilities at the Inveresk Car Park (next to Blue Cafe).
COMMUNICATION & USEFUL LINKS
I would like to remind families of some useful links and apps that you may use to assist with receiving communication from our school.
- SMS Only - 0427 016 460 to report student absences, please send a text to our short message service
- Schoolzine App & Newsletter - Our newsletter is published at the end of every month through Schoolzine. Schoolzine is an app that allows you to communicate with the school, receive notices and newsletters
