Dear Families,
It has been exciting to witness the innovative learning opportunities that students are engaged in every day at our school. Teaching and non- teaching staff willingly go above and beyond to ensure our young people are given the best possible opportunities. When I walk around our school, I am continually amazed at the innovative projects that students are engaged with. Our “Maker’s Space” with its sewing machines, jewellery making equipment and 3 D printers is becoming very popular as is our visual arts wet area.
Exhibitions
It is great to see the school a hive of activity as students are busy organising, preparing and leading their first exhibitions for 2023. I have had the opportunity to witness some outstanding examples of learning and clever presentation ideas from our young people. From, engaging and interesting icebreakers, to the sharing of new learning from personalised interest areas, student exhibitions have been super impressive. Congratulations one and all.
School Improvement Plan
As a school we have been working hard at finalising our School Improvement Plan for 2023. Our plan doesn’t identify all the work that we do, rather it highlights some priority areas of work for our team. After looking closely at our various data sets from 2022, we have established the following reading and wellbeing targets:
Communication/ Reading Targets
- 75% (60) of Grade 9 and Grade 10 students in PAT R will make medium or high gain
- 75% (80) of students will meet the Big Commitment Reading Goal of 120 minutes per week (2022 data < 50%)
- 90% (100) of students will log their reading progress on average twice weekly
- 80% (10) of active Grade 12 students will achieve the IBPLC Communication Level 2 standard and their literacy tick
Personal Qualities/ Wellbeing Targets
All year levels will have achieved positive growth (from Term 1 – Term 4) with regard to the resilience questions stated in the SWES survey
- 50% of Year 11 and 12 students will be in the high or medium range for resilience in the SWES 2023 (Increase from 38% to 50%)
- 65% of LBPS students will have an EOY 2023 attendance at school %, greater than that of the previous year
- 100% of staff will indicate that we are at the ‘embedding’ or ‘excelling’ in all seven areas of the PLC Maturity Matrix by Term 4
Attendance At School Matters- Making Every Minute Count!
In our February newsletter, I spoke about the importance of regular attendance. At LBPS we have a real commitment to supporting and ensuring students attend school. Our school day begins at 8.55 am and finishes at 2:45 pm. We monitor individual student attendance closely and would really like to see all students work hard to increase their individual attendance percentage. I am pleased to say that our current attendance data indicates that over 75% of students are currently attending school more than they did during 2022.
Student Leaders
It was fantastic to recently recognise our 2023 student leaders. I know they are eagerly awaiting opportunities to be proactively involved in the improvement journey of our school. Regularly listening to the ideas of our young people is an important part of our work and to have a forum for our young people to talk about events and issues that affect our school is important. Congratulations to the following leaders:
9A Advisory | Hamish Tillack Smith, Amira Barker |
9B Advisory | Joash Welsh, Kaden Nehls |
10A Advisory | Taya Wright, Sam Walton |
10B Advisory | Riley Casburn, Tom Scambler |
10C Advisory | Wilbur McTaggart Williams, Lyncoln Burton |
11A Advisory | Astryd Cooper, Josh Steer |
11B Advisory | Jayda Summers, Naomi Barry |
12A Advisory | Brayden Cunningham, Zac Arnold |

Learning Through Internship (LTI’s)
Many of our young people have commenced or are busy putting the final organisational touches to their Internships. It is wonderful to chat with students upon their return from their Internships and see the real sense of purpose and authenticity in the work they not only completed off site but are participating in at school. Thank you also to those family members who have assisted with student placements. We are aiming to have every young person involved in a “Learning Through Interest” placement in early term 2 and to do this, require support from our families and community.
Some examples of current internships include:
- Amelie @ Sewing Machine Centre
- Harley @ Legana Gourmet Meats
- Bryah @ Norwood Primary School
- Kole @ Geard Cycles
- Rick @ IT Zen
School Association
Our School Association meets once per term and is a great way to be apart of our school community. We recently held our School Association AGM and first General Meeting for 2023. It was great to re-establish relationships with existing families and to also meet and welcome new family members to our Association. Parents and community members are always welcome to attend any of our meetings. A highlight of our first meeting for me was listening to year 11 student, Connor Harvey, detail and describe his learning journey at LBPS and also his future ambitions. Connor was amazingly confident and articulate. Thank you Connor!
It was also fantastic to have lots of parent and community interest in joining our 2023 School Association. Congratulations to the following elected members for 2023:
- Chairperson - Ben Cunningham
- Deputy Chairperson - Peter Harvey
- Community Representatives - Robert Blackman, Dennis Betts
- Staff Representative - Marianne Olsen
- Secretary/Treasurer - Jennifer Kendall
- Parent Representatives - Monique Teghe, Calinda Richardson, Anthea Chugg, Kate Wells, Debbie White
Please remember that School Association meetings are open to all members of our school community. Our next meeting is Wednesday, 14th June at 5.30pm. Please feel free to come along!
NAPLAN
Last week our Grade 9 students completed their annual NAPLAN testing. We were very proud with the way our students approached their testing. For many it was a challenging week, with the cognitive load quite high. Our students were motivated to try their best which is all that we ask. As a school we will use the results of this testing to identify further learning opportunities for individual students.
Thursday 6th of April is Moderation Day for all teaching staff. Our staff will be working with colleagues from Sothern Big Picture schools (Hobart Big Picture and Sorell). We will be working at establishing shared understandings of where student work sits but more importantly, we will be discussing strategies with regard to what we can do to assist our young people with extending their learning.
Please note that as a consequence of this, Thursday 6th of April is a student free day for all students.
Farewell Dan
Dan Smith has been a very valuable and popular member of our teaching team for a number of years. Dan will be taking Paternity Leave for the remainder of 2023, with his wife Tanya, about to give birth to their second child. I would like to wish Dan, Tanya and Addy all the best and we look forward to meeting the new arrival! And seeing Dan back with us for 2024!!

Mas National
Career Development Team Leader / Women in Trades Representative, Hope from Mas National presented to our year 10 students who are interested in exploring a School Based Traineeship or an Apprenticeship.
Hope can provide a wealth of knowledge and skills to assist students into a trade. Hope spoke about different pathways by learning about industries with a Learning Through Internship placement.
The benefits of learning and building on transferable skills for future employment.
Hope is happy to support any young people in their future employment goals.

THA Hospitality Expo
The THA Hospitality Expo at Peppers Silo was a great success. Students with an interest in hospitality had a fantastic time: making coffee, decorating cupcakes, making mocktails, balancing plates and learning about a wide range of courses available to build skills in this area.

We want your help for our Learning Through Interest Program!
If you are a local business and have opportunities for students to engage in your industry, please contact Mel at melanie.van.asperen@decyp.tas.gov.au
We require host placements in the following areas:
- Information Technology
- Automotive
- Hair & Beauty

Horse Riding
Ruby Hirst has a passion for horse riding and recently competed in the Tasmanian State trials. The event was over 3 days and involved dressage, cross country and show jumping. In a field of 45 riders, Ruby finished in first place - an amazing achievement!

Big Picture School Photography Exhibition
How good is the Big Picture School Photography Exhibition now on display at the QVMAG in Wellington Street? This was the brainchild of our very talented year 10 student, Armon.
It was fantastic to have many of our students attend the opening of the exhibition and witness not only Armon’s work but also the amazing photography skills of Big Picture students worldwide.

Grade 11 Leaving School Project
Grade 11’s have started their ‘Leaving School Project’ which is an important part of being prepared to leave school at the end of Grade 12.
Units include: Career Pathways, Wellbeing, Financial Literacy and Public Systems.
Over the past couple of weeks students have ‘gone walkabout’ to locate and identify important local services such as Centrelink, Post Office, Magistrate’s Court, Service Tasmania and others.
Many students have also taken the opportunity to appreciate some of Launceston’s amazing architecture.

Advisory 10C Exhibition
Getting ready for Exhibitions!
Students in Advisory 10C have been busy finalising their Exhibitions. Some students have been making sure that their Icebreaker activity works according to plan! Other students have been bringing in supporting props that they have found or created themselves.

Bridport Beach
On Friday 17th of March, we, the Grade 12 Advisory, banded together to host a whole school beach day at Bridport. We all made contributions to the day to make it as fun and successful as possible, with help from the Launceston Big Picture School staff.
This project formed a large part of our learning this term as we developed project management skills such as collaboration, organisation, risk management, logistics and leadership. Our work has contributed to our Grade 12 Leaving School Project, which aims to develop our capacities for life beyond school.
Each student took on responsibilities to make the day successful. There was a lot of behind the scenes work from the logistics and food teams that included Fenix and Grace who were, unfortunately, unable to attend on the day. However their planning for the day was excellent and other team members stepped up to take on more jobs.
Tyler arranged a delicious barbeque lunch along with other food and snacks, and he also set up an indoor selection of boardgames. Zach organised a range of fun sports and activities along the beach, whilst Brayden and Aubrey set up a small music and art space on the grass for people less keen to get onto the sand.
James and Abbey took students on a scenic nature walk along the shoreline, and Liam put together a great day of fishing on the rocks. Students also got the opportunity to go swimming amongst the waves, thanks to Chloe and Kath Hawkins and the Bridport Surf Life Saving Club.
We’d like to thank everyone who came along, and we’d also like to thank everyone who helped and contributed to this wonderful day. We worked very hard all term to make this happen, so it was great to see our hard work all come together on the day.

Big Picture Distinguisher 4:
Authentic Assessment
Each term the students exhibit their portfolios of work to a panel made up of the advisory teacher, family, peers, the mentor, and others from the community. They provide evidence of progress against their learning goals, and they reflect on the process of their learning.
Harley Perea - Grade 10B Advisory
Harley demonstrated his new found skills in butchering during his exhibition this term.
He deboned a chicken in front of his audience, giving another student the opportunity to try it for themselves.
Check out the video below to watch and hear Harley explain how it’s all done.’
5. ACTIVE LEARNING/FLEXIBLE GROUPS
Active Learning - Sport & Rec
Students with an interest and a passion for Sport and Recreation visited many community facilities. Lots of fun has been had throughout the term.

Active Learning - Workshop Redevelopment
Students and staff have been busy during Term 1 turning our new workshop space in to a safe, functional and inspiring learning space. Our workshop space was moved during the holidays to make room for the construction of our new downstairs advisory room. Some proactive students who were keen to use the workshop to it’s full potential, helped staff design and transform the space. This included moving large equipment, adding electrical outlets and organising resources, while using the space to create their own products. Students and staff are dedicated to making the workshop as innovative and functional as possible and are looking forward to continuing to develop the space to meet the needs of the whole school community.

Craft Group
In our Craft group students recently made Easter cards. Students were able to look online for inspiration and create their own Easter designs.
Lots of fun and creativity was experienced when making these cards.

INFORMING SCHOOL OF STUDENT ABSENECES
Your child’s Advisory Teacher records attendance daily using the DoE EduPoint system. Attendance is taken between 8:55am – 9:30am.
If your child is going to be absent, you will need to inform the school ASAP - otherwise the EduPoint system automatically marks the absence as ‘Unauthorised-Unexplained’ and this is not altered until communication is received from parents.
The preferred method of communication is to send the school an SMS 0427 016 460 (this is a short message service only, so you will not be able to ring the school on this number).
LBPS admin check the SMS service throughout the day and update any changes to student attendance.
You can of course ring the school direct on 6335 1500 and leave a voice message on the answer phone.
UPDATING STUDENT MEDICAL DETAILS
We are committed to ensuring that our information with regard to managing the wellbeing of our students is always accurate and updated.
If your son/daughter:
- has a medical need and would benefit from being supported by a medical action plan (MAP)
- currently has a Medical Action Plan at school but has had recent health changes and would benefit from their plan being adjusted and updated
- requires the support of medication during the school day
- has any other medical or mental health needs (new or needing to be updated)
We ask that you please complete the relevant attached form and return to our office ASAP.

It is highly recommended that parents and visitors to the school DO NOT PARK along the nature strip in front of the school, along the footpath or on the grass area beside Aurora Stadium.
The City Council have recently approached the school and have informed staff that this area is being patrolled and $86.00 infringements are being issued.
