Dear Families
Welcome to Term 4.
Term 4 is such an exciting term for a school with lots of activities, events and celebrations. This will certainly be the case for Launceston Big Picture School and we look forward to sharing all of these events and celebrations with everyone through our Newsletter and Social Media sites.
Whilst learning remains our key focus for the term, our key end of year celebration events are currently being organised for our students and wider school community. Launceston Big Picture School recognises the importance of celebrating success and we are excitedly working with our students, families and staff to ensure that our end of year activities can still proceed given the covid pandemic. There will be some changes which will be outlined below:
Presentation Awards Evening: Tuesday, 15 December, 5:30pm - 6:30pm
This year our celebration event is again being held at the Boathouse, 55a Lindsay Street. Individual students will be recognised with special and prestigious awards and we will also farewell and congratulate our Year 12 graduates.
Unfortunately for 2020, we can only have a limited number of people attend this event. Award winners and Year 12 graduates will be able to have one family member in attendance (special circumstances will be considered). We will be sending invitations to families in November. Those attending will need to RSVP to the invitation. We thank people for their understanding.
Celebration Dinner: Tuesday, 15 December, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Our Celebration dinner will commence at 6:30pm at the Boathouse. Invited Grade 9-12 students will receive their invitations in November. Students will need to be collected from the front of the Boathouse at 8:30pm.
LBPS Carnival
What a day it was!! Recently we had our second ever whole school carnival but once again, it wasn’t your typical carnival. We had things like a pop quiz, music kahoot, design and technology challenges, just dance challenges. Unfortunately our day was cut short due to a burst water pipe but I know our organising team are currently busy finalising a new date so as we can have our traditional events like tug of war and sprinting. The event was organised by our Year 11 Gang As advisory - simply an amazing event and the leadership demonstrated by our students was first class.
Rock Challenge
Recently Phoebe Kelbasa participated in the Northern Rock Challenge at the Door of Hope. Phoebe performed two original songs and was amazing, representing our school with incredible pride. Judges gave some very positive feedback and I am pleased to say that Phoebe has made it through to the final on Friday, 30 October. Congratulations Phoebe. A huge thank you to Nick Hill and Ben Miller for their work in supporting Phoebe.
School Information Night
Our final family information night for anyone interested in hearing about the great things that happen at our school and more specifically, the key aspects associated with Big Picture Education is on Wednesday, 11 November commencing at 5:00 pm. Anyone interested in attending this is most welcome, however, it is essential that people contact our school office on 6335 1500 to register their name.
Mental Health Workshop
Recently some of our students chose to participate in a mental health workshop at school. It was amazing to see so many of our young people so keen to increase their awareness and understanding of mental health. I am sure that our students took lots of key understandings away from the day. Thank you to Rod Lambert and Gayle Carroll-Whitley for leading this session.
School Uniform
It is really pleasing to see the huge number of our students who are choosing to wear our school uniform. All students need to remember that when leaving our school, uniform is compulsory. School uniform items can be purchased from our reception area. Please see Kat or Jennifer.
Student Free Day
Please be aware that Friday, 30 October is a student free day. All of our staff will be involved in professional learning during this day.

Principal
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from students who would like to join our school in 2021. The Big Picture Learning Design requires students to actively engage in planning and participating in their own academically rigorous and personalised learning program. Some of the key criteria are:
- Students with strong attendance and work ethic, but may not perform at their best in exam situations.
- Students who are self-motivated and can work in a highly personalised way
- Students who have the confidence to participate in a Learning Through Internship (up to 30 days per year or 180 hours)
We will be hosting an Information Evening on Wednesday, 11 November for interested families. This will be at our school, 4 Invermay Rd Inveresk, commencing at 5:00pm. Families wishing to attend should RSVP by contacting our school office on 6335 1500 or by emailing Tanya Ringuet- tanya.ringuet@education.gov.tas.au.
Following expressions of interest, students will be invited to participate in a transition program designed to give students a deeper understanding of the Big Picture Design including Advisory, Learning Goals, Learning through Internship and Exhibitions.
We have limited places in Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 for 2021; interested students should RSVP to attend the Family Information Evening.
If you have any questions or require further clarification, please contact Tanya Ringuet by email tanya.ringuet@education.gov.tas.au or by phone 0400 169 684.

Sport and Recreation
The sport and recreation group had loads of fun experiencing 8 ball on Friday, 16 October! A big thank you to the Launceston Worker’s Club for the use of their facilities.
Cooking
Our students with an interest in Food & Cooking had an amazing experience on Monday, 19 October. Nabin the head chef at Black Cow Bistro spent the day with us. He led a workshop with our students where they organised and prepared a traditional Bhutanese lunch for our entire school community. Such a fantastic experience for our students and wow, what an amazing lunch!! Thank you also to Dill and Krishna and Robyn Ellenberger for also assisting with the day.
It’s a great start to Term 4 with numerous students on Internship placements.
While visiting Jorja at Scotch Oakburn College working in a Year 4 class, I was able to observe Jorja completing her LTI project. Students were immensely engaged with Jorja as she delivered a lesson on Malala Yousafzai a story about a young Pakistan girl’s right for an education. Jorja’s natural talent and initiative skills to interact with young students and providing additional support to Mrs Buck in class is a real demonstration of a successful Internship placement. Well Done Jorja.
Year 9 student Jade is enjoying her LTI placement at Lulu’s Café in Trevallyn. Jade is learning all roles within the hospitality industry from experiencing front of house serving customers, clearing tables to working back of house in the kitchen. Jade’s enthusiasm shows and fits well to the busy café environment.
Hogs Breath Café have contributed to our Learning Through Internship by accepting three students to their business. Brayden, Rhian and Sheryden are all experiencing and learning in a nationally recognised restaurant. Thank you to James and his team at Hogs Breath Café for providing an opportunity to learn in the real world.
Jake’s LTI placement is with Roll Cycles Tas. A huge thank you for supporting our school and mentoring Jake with a real world learning experience.
Speed Careering
It was great to have the SES, Tas Fire, St John’s Ambulance and Tas Police visit our school on Wednesday, 14 October. Thank you Neil, Frances, Belinda, Katelyn and Justine for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience with our students.
We want your help for our Learning Through Internship Program!
If you are a local business and have opportunities for students to engage in your industry during this uncertain time please contact Mel at melanie.van.asperen@education.tas.gov.au.

RYDA
The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program (RYDA) is a series of practical and powerful workshops that aim to change the way young people think about road safety. All of our Year 10 students recently participated in an interactive one-day experience, our students experienced braking at different speeds, devise travel strategies that will work for them in the real world and they got tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family. Perhaps the most impactful moments came from the personal stories of loss and survival. Congratulations and thank you to Leah Durie and Mikayla Aldred (two of our amazing Year 12 students) for organising this opportunity for our Year 10 students.
Students are encouraged to nominate other students who have shown Aspiration, Courage, Respect or Growth. Winners receive a voucher from the Railway Café. Our weekly winners are:
Hosana Lucas – for Courage with learning new skills in the area of computer gaming.
Sienna Barrett – for Growth as a Big Picture learner.
- Academic Rigour: Head, Heart and Hand
Big Picture schools have a strong intellectual purpose for each and every student. Students are continually challenged to deepen their learning and improve their performance across five learning goals: quantitative reasoning, empirical reasoning, social reasoning, communication skills and personal qualities. A high standard of academic work is expected of all students.
- Leaving to Learn: Learning through Internships
Students work two days a week in an interest-based internship with a mentor from the community on an intellectually rigorous real-world project that is connected to their learning goals.

School Absences
Informing School of Student Absences
Your child’s Advisory Teacher records attendance daily using the DoE EduPoint system. Attendance is taken between 8:55am – 9:30am. If your child is going to be absent, you will need to inform the school ASAP - otherwise the EduPoint system automatically marks the absence as ‘Unauthorised-Unexplained’ and this is not altered until communication is received from parents. The preferred method of communication is to send the school an SMS on – 0427 016 460 (this is a short message service only, so you will not be able to ring the school on this number). LBPS admin check the SMS service throughout the day and update any changes to student attendance. You can of course ring the school direct on 6335 1500 and leave a voice message on the answerphone.
Parking
Please be vigilant when parking along the school’s nature strip and footpath during drop off/pick up times - as the City Council are distributing $70 parking fines. Requests to the City Council to withdraw the fines are proving ineffective, as they are unable to alter the State Government standards.
Foster Care program at Baptcare
Foster care is about providing a safe, secure and stable environment for a child or young person when they are unsafe or unable to remain at home.
Baptcare operates a foster care program in Tasmania and we are in need of new foster carers to provide support to children and young people across the state.
Support available from CatholicCare Tasmania
Please see the attached a flyer for the PAUSE parenting program facilitated by CatholicCare. The program is aimed at parents of adolescents (8-18). Due to current COVID-19 restrictions the program is now being offered online. During the program parents will be given information about their child’s brain development, communication, social media, internet safety, problem solving and how to have difficult conversations.
Please see the attached flyer from CatholicCare for services available in the Launceston area regardless of circumstances or background.
