Dear Families,
It has been another productive and exciting term with many authentic opportunities for our students to learn and grow. Students have participated in over 200 LTI placements already this year along with many other excursions and activities. It still amazes me how many outlearning opportunities are available for our students and even this week we have students completing Barista training at Drysdale and participating in the Amnesty Australia Peace Walk for Justice.
Earlier this term we held a successful Family Information Evening led by current staff and students with over 100 people in attendance. It was wonderful to see so many people in the building learning about how we work here, and we now have a long list of prospective students ready to complete one of our 5-day transition programs. We will be having another Family Information Evening on 9th November for those who missed out last time or who have expressed interest more recently. We also held an information session for our current year 9 and 10 families focusing on the International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC) which is our new form of assessment for Big Picture students in years 11 and 12. Tanya Ringuet (Big Picture Education Coach) led the session and explained how the IBPLC recognises and evaluates the capacities and experiences of our senior graduates.
Our External School Review was postponed due to staffing issues with the review team. We are looking forward to welcoming the review team here after the holidays (Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th October) and listening to their feedback on what our School Improvement Plan could be focusing on over the next four years.
Once again, student exhibitions were a highlight of the term.
I was particularly impressed and proud of our grade 12 students who presented extremely well to their panel of invited guests and also a gallery of peers and staff.
This experience was valuable to the younger students as it provided further understanding and inspiration for their future learning and projects while completing the IBPLC in years 11 and 12.

UTAS Community Garden
A photo of students at the new UTAS Inveresk Community Garden, is the newest and largest food garden within the University’s Edible Campus program.
It’s an opportunity to work together with mentor Jeff, UTAS Community Garden Coordinator learning about sustainability, on how to access fresh, local, and nutritious produce by using the large, raised garden beds.
The garden also features a glasshouse for seedling production. Jeff is educating businesses to recycle green waste by using an in-vessel composting machine.
The machine receives up to 75kg of food scraps, garden waste and office waste per day, averting methane-emitting materials from landfill and turning them into rich organic compost for use in the garden.
Harley, Oliver, Aiden, Amy, and Holly built a trellis before planting snow pea seedlings into one of the raised garden beds. Big Picture School have been allocated four garden beds to maintain and contribute towards the community garden program.

I really connect with a stall holder who produces his own fishing lures via 3D printing.
This inspired me to investigate and print my own Lures and this project I am going to continue next Term.
Thanks for Harry Worker from 9B Advisory for organising this experience.

Macoroni and Cheese Pasta
Today in cooking we made macaroni and cheese pasta. Students learnt when to put the pasta in the pot, the importance of using a timer to cook the pasta and learnt consistency when it came to making a cheese sauce. Calculations were made to make sure the students stayed in the budget when it came to choosing what to cook next week also.

Low Budget Meals
On Wednesday July 27th the cooking class for term three will be focussing on low budget meals.
$30 was the maximum spending allowed that the group agreed on to feed seven people.
Meals were selected from the four step recipe books by Kim McCosker and Rachael Bermingham.
Quantitative Reasoning is the Big Picture Learning Goal that has been chosen to focus on this term in cooking.
Using mathematical equations to compare prices on ingredients in the weekly Coles and Woolworths catalogues to allow choice over the most quantity, brand and cost-effective price when considering what to buy if they were in charge.
The cooking class has selected on a maximum of thirty dollars as the budget they cannot go over each week.
This week 26th July 2022 Wednesday's cooking class made savoury toast. They worked out that to buy the ingredients to make this meal for at least seven people it would cost $ 18.00 Students learnt where cooking appliances were kept and worked out together what meal would be made next week and how much it would cost.

Studentworks
Nathaniel has started a hospitality course at Studentworks for two days a week this term and is thoroughly enjoying his time there. Here are some of Nathaniel’s reflections from his first two weeks:
We have cooked lemon slice, carrot cake and chocolate brownies and today we cooked quiche, schnitzel and we also had to do some dishes.
- The skills I have been working on are my knife skills and my coffee skills.
- On the 8th of August I got to go around studentworks and ask all the teachers and the Smith Family if they would like coffees. On the second block we did some prep ready to cook food for the old people’s home in Mowbray. I also got to go get some food orders from the teachers and the Smith Family. And during last block we all have had to clean up the kitchen and wash the dishes and cloths.
- I have also enjoyed cooking food, making new friends and kicking my soccer ball at lunch today and I love seeing Maree the office lady who left LBPS.
- Next week I am looking forward to doing pizza days.

RYDA Excursion
Last Friday was the RYDA program. (RYDA stands for Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) All grade 10’s across Tasmania were required to go to the program in order to gain a bit more knowledge about driving safely out on the road. There were six sessions in total, and all of them lasted about 30 minutes per session. Lunch was shorter than normal, and so was recess.
We left school at round about 9 o’clock, and we left RYDA at 1:30. The whole reason why the grade 10’s went through this process was to become more aware of our responsibilities as drivers and the risks involved. RYDA also had a booklet that we needed to fill out, and if you filled out that booklet, it is worth 5 hours of your Learner’s Driving Log Book.

Ukraine Poem
From the other shore, her mother shouts and begs her,
just one step further,
Run, to run from guns and men with drums.
With her little sister screaming at her side.
Face, spattered mud, grit mixed with blood.
The child’s still looking at the sky,
will she live, or will she die?
But what the little girl has seen,
is, through light, an angel white wings supreme.
That bears in hand a broken heart and in the other its counterpart.
If She dies,
her mother cries.
if she lives,

Enterprise Market
Students from Grade 10B and 11 have been working during Term 3 on organising a student run market that will sell products made by students.
The market is part of Advisory Social Action Projects that aim to raise products, funds and awareness of homelessness in Launceston. The products and funds will be used to create bags of essential items that Vinnies will give to those in need. Amber Hartland has been busy co-ordinating the market as her event planning project.
This project has allowed students to expand their Quantitative Reasoning by learning about stock, product and budgeting. Individual maker projects also involve a lot of QR such as some students are making chopping boards, some are cooking and others are crocheting.
Enterprise Market will be held on Monday 24 and Wednesday 26 October from 12:00-5:pm at Launceston Big Picture School.
Amber has made a website to share details of our market https://amberhartland00.wixsite.com/my-site and she will be updating this as we get closer to the market dates.

BOB'S BIKES PROGRAM
Our school is very proud of the Bob’s Bikes Program which is led and coordinated by Robert and Shirley Blackman.
Bob's Bikes has been going strong since 2011, and Launceston Big Picture School have supported the program since 2016, and all the money generated goes direct to charity.
Our students help Bob to repair and restore bikes which Bob and Shirley then sell on GumTree or you can find some of the bikes on sale from outside the front of our school building.
The amount of money raised and appeals supported by Bob and Shirley is simply amazing and since 2016, they have raised over $17,790.00 which has gone directly to UNHCR, The UN Refugee Agency Australia.
At the moment, we are not taking any more bikes as we have plenty in stock.
Bob Bikes Program currently runs on Wednesday afternoons
INFORMING SCHOOL OF STUDENT ABSENECES
Your child’s Advisory Teacher records attendance daily using the DoE EduPoint system. Attendance is taken between 8:55am – 9:30am.
If your child is going to be absent, you will need to inform the school ASAP - otherwise the EduPoint system automatically marks the absence as ‘Unauthorised-Unexplained’ and this is not altered until communication is received from parents.
The preferred method of communication is to send the school an SMS 0427 016 460 (this is a short message service only, so you will not be able to ring the school on this number).
LBPS admin check the SMS service throughout the day and update any changes to student attendance.
You can of course ring the school direct on 6335 1500 and leave a voice message on the answer phone.
UPDATING STUDENT MEDICAL DETAILS
We are committed to ensuring that our information with regard to managing the wellbeing of our students is always accurate and updated.
If your son/daughter:
- has a medical need and would benefit from being supported by a medical action plan (MAP)
- currently has a Medical Action Plan at school but has had recent health changes and would benefit from their plan being adjusted and updated
- requires the support of medication during the school day
- has any other medical or mental health needs (new or needing to be updated)
We ask that you please complete the relevant attached form and return to our office ASAP.
