Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 4!
Term 4 is such an exciting term for a school with lots of activities, events and celebrations. This will certainly be the case for Launceston Big Picture School and we look forward to sharing all of these events and celebrations with everyone through our Newsletter and Social Media sites.
Our senior students have been busily putting the finishing touches to their digital graduation portfolios - they look amazing and I hope to share some examples in the next newsletter! This year all of our year 12 graduates will receive their International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC). I would like to acknowledge and congratulate our students and 11/12 staff for their work with what is an extremely exciting addition to Big Picture assessment processes. I encourage you to read the information within this newsletter about the IBPLC and watch the IBPLC video.
Whilst learning remains our key focus for the term, our key end of year celebration events are currently being organised for our students and wider school community. Launceston Big Picture School recognises the importance of celebrating success and we are excitedly working with our students, families and staff to ensure that our end of year activities recognise the fantastic achievements of our young people. There will still be some changes “to the norm” which will be outlined below:
Presentation Awards Evening: Tuesday, 14th December, 5:30pm - 6:30pm
This year our celebration event is again being held at the Boathouse, 55a Lindsay Street. Individual students will be recognised with special and prestigious awards and we will also farewell and congratulate our year 12 graduates.
Unfortunately for 2021, we can once again only have a limited number of people attend this event. Award winners and year 12 graduates will be able to have one family member in attendance (special circumstances will be considered). We will be sending invitations to families in November. Those attending will need to RSVP to their invitation. We thank people for their understanding.
Celebration Dinner: Tuesday, 14th December, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Our Celebration dinner will commence at 6:30pm at the Boathouse. Invited grade 9-12 students will receive their invitations in November. Students will need to be collected from the front of the Boathouse at 8:30pm.
School Information Night: Wednesday, 10th November, 5:00pm
Our final family information night for anyone interested in hearing about the great things that happen at our school and more specifically, the key aspects associated with Big Picture Education is on Wednesday November 10th commencing at 5:00 pm.
Anyone interested in attending this is most welcome, however, it is essential that you contact Marianne Olsen at school on 63 351 500 or marianne.olsen@education.tas.gov.au to register your intent to attend.

New Enrolments For 2022
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from students who would like to join our school in 2022. The Big Picture Learning Design requires students to actively engage in planning and participating in their own academically rigorous and personalised learning program. Some of the key criteria are:
- Students with strong attendance and work ethic, but may not perform at their best in exam situations.
- Students who are self-motivated and can work in a highly personalised way
- Students who have the confidence to participate in a Learning Through Internship (up to 30 days per year or 180 hours)
We will be hosting an Information Evening on Wednesday 10th November for interested families. This will be at our school, 4 Invermay Rd Inveresk, commencing at 5:00pm. Families wishing to attend should RSVP by contacting our school office on 63 351500 or by emailing Marianne Olsen- marianne.olsen@education.gov.tas.au.
Following the evening, expressions of interest students will be invited to participate in a transition program designed to give students a deeper understanding of the Big Picture Design including Advisory, Learning Goals, Learning through Internship and Exhibitions.
We also have limited places in Grades 10, 11 & 12 for 2022; interested students should RSVP to attend the Family Information Evening.
If you have any questions or require further clarification, please contact Marianne Olsen at school.
2. LEARNING THROUGH INTERNSHIP
Plants and Bikes on LTI
As we end week 3 of term 4 students have been Leaving to Learn in numerous ways.
From fishing to joining local community centres where students explore and learn from industry experts.
During Term 3, Taya did an Internship placement at Niche Plants. At school, her project focussed on plants - designing and planting succulent glass pots and selling them to people to brighten up their office spaces.
Another interest area of Taya’s is dirt bike riding. On a Tuesday afternoon, Taya made a visit to Motorcycle City on Tamar St, asking questions about the industry and retail business. From this experience she enquired about the possibility of some Shadow Days and, as a result, Taya successfully completed these Shadow Days and has transferred into an Internship for term 4.
During Taya’s Learning Through Internship she has assembled two motor bike stands as shown in the photo.
Well done Taya in the progress you have made in Leaving to Learn, and a very big thank you to Motorcycle City for supporting Launceston Big Picture School.
Zach’s Fishing Trip and LTI
On Wednesday the 20th of September, a contingent of 5 students made their way to the Hillwood Pontoon for the first of a series of Fishing Trips organised by year 9 student Zach Kerrison.
Having consulted the Bureau of Meteorology’s weather app religiously, Kerro was able to pick a fantastic weather day for the trip. Sadly, the fishing results did not live up to the same standard as the weather.
Ally Pryke was the most successful member of the group, snagging two undersized Flathead who were carefully returned to grow a little bigger.
Despite returning home empty handed, the group is very excited for the next trip- targeting squid at the Clarence Point Pontoon on the 3rd of November.
We would also like to congratulate Zach on securing Shadow days at Tamar Marine - with any luck Zach will be able to secure sponsorship for the Launceston Big Picture Fishing Squad!
We want your help for our Learning Through Internship Program!
If you are a local business and have opportunities for students to engage in your industry during these uncertain times, please contact Mel at melanie.van.asperen@education.tas.gov.au

Bake it Blue Fundraiser
The Drowning Starfish Advisory have had a very productive start to Term 4.
We worked to develop project skills, cooking skills, knowledge about genetics and to develop our teamwork. We chose to support Jeans for Genes with a Bake it Blue fundraising event. Jeans for Genes raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute who develop cures for children with genetic disorders.
1 in 20 kids face a birth defect or genetic disease. With over 6,000 different known genetic diseases – most of which are poorly understood and have no specific treatments or cures – research is more important than ever. Genetic diseases are caused by errors in our DNA, the instructions for making ‘us’. DNA is the source of information for all the cells in our body, telling them what to do every second of every day.
When something goes wrong with those instructions, it means some part of our body doesn’t function properly, leading to a life-threatening genetic disease like cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, metabolic disorders or even cancer.
The best way to treat or cure many of these conditions is to correct the problem at the source, to correct the DNA. That’s what gene therapy does.
We have raised a total of $396.00 by selling blue morning tea goodies, hosting a coin line competition and advertising our fundraising page.

Wil's Patisserie
My project this term at the Launceston Big Picture School is to create some different kinds of sweet pastries and bread. I decided to do this as I am very passionate about baking and wanted to further my personal abilities in the industry.
So, about a week ago, I started by making croissants. By using the recipe below and measuring up my ingredients (flour, butter, yeast, sugar, water, and milk), I was able to successfully make the base dough and begin to lock the butter into it.
I did this by flattening unsalted butter and then folding it into the dough. This process is called lamination. I then kept on folding the dough over and flattening it out until I had many layers of butter and dough. I then shaped the croissants and set them to prove, before throwing them into the oven.
The result is yet to be seen however, I will try my best to photograph them when they come out.

New Pathway: The International Big Picture Learning Credential
Year 11 and 12 students graduate from Big Picture schools with an innovative new credential that is a non-ATAR pathway to employment, training college or university. The International Big Picture Learning Credential is warranted by the University of Melbourne, and it recognises a wider range of capacities, skills and qualities than traditional end-of-school assessment systems.
Student achievements are represented in an interactive Learner Profile that combines academic results with personalised insights into the learning and work of students. It unlocks entry to over 16 universities around Australia with whom Big Picture has negotiated partnerships, and it provides employers with they will need to pursue their interests after leaving school.
RYDA
The Rotary Driver Awareness Program (RYDA) is a series of practical and powerful workshops that aim to change the way young people think about road safety.
All our year 10 students recently participated in an interactive one-day experience with RYDA at Symmons Plains.
Our students experienced braking at different speeds, devising travel strategies that will work for them in the real world and recieved tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family.
Perhaps the most impactful moments came from the personal stories of loss and survival.
Construction with John Crick
Our students are always working on all kinds of wonderful and different projects.
John Crick is one of our many helpers who bring their knowledge, advise and assistance to help students achieve their goals outside of the generic classroom environment.
Music
We have many talented music students.
Phoebe Kelbassa, from 12A Advisory, is one of those and recently performed in Town Hall.
She is busily preparing to perform at our End of Year Celebration Dinner as well.
Art
We also have some very talented art students! For example, these watercolours by Elke Brooke, from 9B Advisory.
And these paintings by Tyler Loone, from 10A Advisory.
Sport and Recreation
Recently Sport and Recreation students had the opportunity ti explore and use the facilities of the Northern Table Tennis club at Elphin. Such a great afternoon was had by all!
Cooking with Shirley
Shirley Blackman is one of highly appreciated volunteers. She is often seen in the kitchen sharing her knowledge and helping students create delicious treats.
Aspiration, Courage, Respect, Growth
We are always looking for ways of rewarding positive behaviour at our school.
Students and staff are encouraged to nominate those people who have shown Aspiration, Courage, Respect or Growth. Winners receive a voucher from Bizy Bee Café, Invermay Road and our winners this month so far are:
- Harley Wykes: Courage and Growth - for obtaining an LTI at TJM and learning whilst on the job.
- Amber Hartland: Courage and Growth - for demontration her leadership skills organising Town Hall.

Bob's Bikes For Sale!
Our school is very proud of our Bob’s Bikes program!!
Students who have an interest in working with bikes work with our coordinator, Bob Blackman, one afternoon a week to renovate the bikes. This renovation work achieves two main objectives: to involve students in a community project which is designed to benefit other people or causes; and to learn practical and technical skills associated with bike care and maintenance. Some of the bikes are sold directly from the school but the majority of the bikes are sold on Gumtree.
The program continues to have a partnership with Tasmania Police in Launceston who regularly supply and donate unclaimed bikes in their possession. Donations of bikes are also received from members of the local community who have become aware of and want to support the program.
Recently Shirley Blackman (Bob’s wife and financial manager of the program) transferred an amount of $3,100.00 on behalf of the school into Australia for UNHCR's NAB bank account.
Of the $3100.00, we have asked to donate $2,500 to your Afghanistan emergency appeal; and $500.00 to the ongoing emergency appeal for the the crisis in Yemen.
As a school we are very much in appreciation of the work of Bob and Shirley Blackman – our students gain so much from this project and we can also assist such worthwhile causes.
COVID Quick Check-In TAS
To comply with Public Health Directions, our school is now set up with the COVID Check In TAS App. This app enables visitors to our school to register their visit using the self-check-in QR code and have their information directly stored with the Tasmanian Department of Health for contact tracing (if required).
Use of the app will help the Tasmanian contact tracing team quickly identify and assist anyone who may have been exposed to COVID-19.
Click on the link below for instructions on how to Download the COVID Check-In TAS App.
Big Picture Education has 12 distinguishers.
In our newsletter we will share them.

9. Families Are Enrolled Too
Big Picture schools aim for real family engagement. Parents or carers are regarded as essential members of the learning team, beginning with the application process and progressing through to learning plan development, exhibitions and graduation.
COVID-19 Vaccinations Available for Students Aged 12 and Over
The Tasmanian Government is working hard to provide the COVID-19 vaccination to all Tasmanian’s aged 12 and above.
As you may be aware there have been a number of clinics run in colleges to vaccinate students in years 11 and 12. There will also be a small number of regional high schools that will host a vaccine clinic but this is not something that will be occurring at high schools in larger population centres at this point in time.
However, there are a number of different options available for parents to arrange for students aged 12 and above to be vaccinated, these include:
- At one of the community clinics across the state. Appointments can be made by visiting coronavirus.tas.gov.au/booking or calling the Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738.
- At participating GPs - contact your local GP directly to make a booking.
- At selected pharmacies - find one near you at com.au
Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family and the wider community from COVID-19. Don’t wait. Vaccinate.
Young people under the age of 16 are encouraged to attend their vaccination appointment with a parent or guardian.
There are a number of places where you are able to find more information in relation to the COVID-19 vaccine. You may like to look at this information with your child to support them in understanding more about the vaccination:
- Information from the Australian Government about COVID-19 vaccines
- Information from the Tasmanian Government about COVID-19 vaccines
Information from the Western Australia Government through a video presented by Dr Karl Kruszelnicki which answers common questions and dispel myths about COVID-19 vaccines.

Informing School of Student Absences
Your child’s Advisory Teacher records attendance daily using the DoE EduPoint system. Attendance is taken between 8:55am – 9:30am.
If your child is going to be absent, you will need to inform the school ASAP - otherwise the EduPoint system automatically marks the absence as ‘Unauthorised-Unexplained’ and this is not altered until communication is received from parents.
The preferred method of communication is to send the school an SMS 0427 016 460 (this is a short message service only, so you will not be able to ring the school on this number).
LBPS admin check the SMS service throughout the day and update any changes to student attendance.
You can of course ring the school direct on 6335 1500 and leave a voice message on the answer phone.
Updating Student Medical Details
We are committed to ensuring that our information with regard to managing the wellbeing of our students is always accurate and updated.
If your son/daughter:
-has a medical need and would benefit from being supported by a medical action plan (MAP)
-currently has a Medical Action Plan at school but has had recent health changes and would benefit from their plan being adjusted and updated
-requires the support of medication during the school day
-has any other medical or mental health needs (new or needing to be updated)
We ask that you please complete the relevant attached form and return to our office ASAP.
School Uniform
It is compulsory for students to wear their school uniform when attending school excursions, interviews, LTIs or if they are representing the school at events.
Uniforms can be purchased from the school office and are sold at cost price:
- Polo Shirts with school logo = $30
- School Hoody with school logo = $65
Any pre-worn uniform donations would be very much appreciated and are used in our emergency uniform/clothing pool.
Parking Inveresk Precinct
It is highly recommended that parents and visitors to the school DO NOT PARK along the nature strip in front of the school, slong the footpath or on the grass area beside Aurora Stadium.
The City Council have recently approached the school and have advised these areas are being patrolled and infringements are being issued.
Parents and visitors are advised to use the paid parking facilities at the Inveresk Car Park (next to Blue Cafe).
Communication & Useful Links
I would like to remind families of some useful links and apps that you may use to assist with receiving communication from our school.
- SMS Only - 0427 016 460 to report student absences, please send a text to our short message service
- Schoolzine App & Newsletter - Our newsletter is published at the end of every month through Schoolzine. Schoolzine is an app that allows you to communicate with the school, receive notices and newsletters
- School Website - Our website allows you to access lots of useful information about our school
- School Facebook - please 'like' our facebook page as we often post communication to parents on there
